Brian's Work

Brian was very enthusiastic about his video and photographic adventures. His dream was to one day create a full-length documentary. During his time in Afghanistan, he hoped to compile enough video and photographs to be able to put together a view of Afghanistan and its people like we don't usually see in the news reports. He loved the rich culture and the varied landscapes. He enjoyed being around his Afghan friends and meeting new friends along the way.

We hope you enjoy these videos of Afghanistan as well as the other videos Brian put together. Some were created during his university years at James Madison University while earning his Bachelor's degree in Media Arts and Design.

BUZKASHI

A wild and rugged sport of Afghanistan

Who Am I

This is a video Brian did for one of his SMAD classes at JMU. This video written by Brian ponders the idea of 'life flashing before your eyes' in a life or death situation. He is the actor in this piece who has that situation before him.

Hammer Jam

Watch as Afghan Metal workers beat out their creations

Circles

Amazing footage of break dancing. Brian put this together for a SMAD class.

I recently came across this video documentary by photojournalist Seamus Murphy  that captures much of the story of the dark times that Afghans have faced. Brian, too, wanted to tell a story about Afghanistan. His work, we found, would have been titled "The Beautiful...It's Not All War" The following is an excerpt from mediastorm.com which hosts this deep view into the people of Afghanistan.

A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan examines thirty years of Afghan history. It is the story of ordinary citizens whose lives play out in the shadow of superpowers. There are tales of violence to be sure, but there is also love and even romance.

Based on 14 trips to Afghanistan between 1994 and 2010, A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan is the work of renowned photojournalist Seamus Murphy. His work chronicles a people caught time and again in political turmoil, struggling to find their way.
